“Translated DNA”

18'' x 24"

Charcoal on Paper

This work reflects the emotional and distant relationship with my Hispanic father, who was removed from the country when I was at a very young age. Our relationship was changed due to this, yet we share many aspects of ourselves and our identity. The warped facial features represent the sharing of self, but also the forgetting of who we are to each other. Only seeing each other’s lives through photos, phone calls, and memories. We are connected biologically but lost in translation.

“Skeleton Study”

24" x 36"

White Charcoal on Black Paper

This still life works in reverse of a normal still life. Focusing on the highlights rather than the shadows. This helps understand values as well as the placement of charcoal.

The objects in my piece represent the last things my dad gave me before having to leave. The suitcase holds these random yet sentimental objects together. However, the items appear to have been thrown loosely into a closet, creating a sense of the objects being forgotten and messy.
